Application Procedures for Participating Universities
The National Certified Counselor (NCC) is the premier counseling certification. National certification demonstrates to colleagues and the public that high national standards for the practice of counseling have been met. With the NCC application option for participating universities, you can give your students the opportunity to apply for the NCC and sit for the National Counselor Examination (NCE) or the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) while still enrolled. Promoting Counseling Through Certification
As a campus coordinator, you play a vital role in promoting professional counseling standards and encouraging students’ career development through national certification. The campus coordinator is the primary liaison between the counseling program and NBCC. Role Campus Coordinator Campus Coordinator Responsibilities • Instruct students in the distinction between certification and licensure. • Determine student eligibility and submit participation roster. • Encourage students to complete the application process. • Promote and explain the National Certified Counselor (NCC).
NBCC Steps • NBCC provides campus coordinators with instructions for the upcoming application cycle. 3 | Exam Administration • NBCC emails application information to students listed on the roster. • NBCC sends periodic reminders to students regarding application deadline. • NBCC assists students with application questions through certification@nbcc.org. • NBCC exports student information and test authorizations to Pearson VUE. 2 Student 1 Campus Contact Contact Exam Options • NCC applicants can choose either the National Counselor Examination (NCE) or the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) as the certification exam. – Both the NCE and NCMHCE are administered electronically at a Pearson VUE testing center or via the OnVUE online platform. – Both the NCE and NCMHCE are administered over a five-week testing window.
Remind students that they are applying for the National Certified Counselor (NCC) certification and some requirements will not be met until after they pass the exam and receive their degree. • Transcripts – Students in CACREP-accredited programs do not need to provide a transcript until after degree conferral. – Students in programs with institutional accreditation need to upload an unofficial transcript when applying. About the NCC Application About the NCC Application cont... • Ethics – By signing the application, students agree to abide by all NBCC policies and procedures, including the NBCC Code of Ethics and the Policy Regarding the Provision of Distance Professional Services. – If a disclosure is made, the Ethics Department will contact the student to provide further instructions regarding necessary documentation. • Coursework – Students in programs with institutional accreditation will need to complete the coursework information by indicating courses they have taken, are taking, and will be taking as part of their degree program.
• Payment – NBCC accepts debit or credit cards. Payment in full must be made when the application is submitted. • Application Review – Students will be contacted directly with any questions regarding their application. – Students can check the status of their application online. • Post-Examination – After examination scores have been uploaded to student accounts, students can have them sent to any third party by submitting a Score Verification Request form in their Credentialing Gateway accounts. About the NCC Application cont... • Completing Certification – After they have passed the examination and their degree has been conferred, applicants complete the other steps in the NCC application process. • After Certification – NCCs maintain active status by fulfilling continuing education requirements, adhering to the NBCC Code of Ethics and the Policy Regarding the Provision of Distance Professional Services, and paying annual fees. Institutional Accreditation • Keeping NBCC informed about curriculum changes. Programs with institutional accreditation have additional responsibilities that include: • Sending NBCC any changes or updates to courses, course titles, course numbers, etc. o Syllabi for new or significantly changed coursework should be sent to campusinquiry@nbcc.org. Effective January 1, 2027, only students in CACREP-accredited programs will be eligible to apply. How Students Access Online Application the Students should: – Watch for email invitation. (Be sure to check spam and junk folders.) – Follow invitation instructions carefully to avoid errors and benefit from student pricing. – Click on “Create Gateway Account,” and when prompted, use the registration code in your email.
